Established as a community in the 1850s, the Village of Volo formally incorporated in 1993.
The Village is located in west central Lake County approximately 45 miles northwest of the
Chicago Loop and 35 miles from O’Hare International Airport.
Originally named Forksville with its name changed to Volo in 1872, the community emerged as
a rural hamlet at the crossroads of two major state highways, U.S. Route 12 and Illinois Route 120. Both highways have grown in their significance as the area has grown. Each are four-lane
divided arterials and the Illinois Department of Transportation designates both as Strategic
Regional Arterial routes. The high level of accessibility afforded by these highways has been
essential in Volo’s growth from an agricultural community to a burgeoning Village spawned by
strong demand for new housing, business development opportunities and employment center.
