It takes a good deal of time and effort for elected municipal officials to get up to speed (and to stay there) in developing a working knowledge of your rights and responsibilities as a board or council member. You oversee and decide matters ranging from zoning to employment to business regulation to liquor licensing. Your rights and responsibilities as an elected official are largely shaped by the Constitution and by a multitude of federal and state laws and regulations. Learning or keeping up with key legal principles to properly perform your duties regarding local governance is critical. You are required to perform these responsibilities in compliance with all requirements for open, transparent government under the Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act.

For newly elected officials, we will try to put you on the path to building an understanding of these essential legal rights and responsibilities, or for current elected officials, keep you on the right path of learning and refining your knowledge of the rules and regulations governing municipal operations as they evolve.
