Mosquito-borne Diseases and Prevention in Lake County

Mosquito-borne diseases present significant health problems, both nationwide and locally. In recent years, several diseases have emerged in Lake County. These include West Nile Virus, mosquito-borne encephalitis and imported cases of Zika Virus, Dengue and Chikungunya. Culex species mosquitoes that cause WNV and other mosquito-borne encephalitis’ are found in Lake County from spring to fall.  Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that cause Zika Virus can be occasionally imported to Lake County via empty containers and tires. Aedes albopictus hypothetically can carry the Zika Virus and is in close proximity to Lake County, south of Interstate 80. Finally, Lake County conducts mosquito surveillance and control activities throughout the mosquito season. Mosquito-borne diseases are preventable and depend on local efforts.
